A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE - DAY 26 - Z IS FOR ZUCCHINI

Day 26 is Z – A-Z Blog Challenge http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

Z is for Zucchini

Do you love chocolate cake? How about Chocolate Zucchini Cake? We do and don’t be put off by the zucchini. This is what makes the cake so moist and delicious and probably one of the reasons it freezes so well.

Heat oven to 325F

Grate 2 cups of zucchini and set aside. (One time I only had 1-1/4 cups so I made up the difference with grated apple. It was delicious.)
Sift together 2-1/2 cups flour, one-quarter cup cocoa, and 1 teaspoon each of baking soda and salt, and set aside.
Cream one-half cup unsalted butter with one-half cup canola oil and 1-3/4 cups of sugar.
Beat 2 eggs into butter mixture along with 1 teaspoon of vanilla.
Add flour along with one-half cup of buttermilk.
Stir in grated zucchini.
Pour into 13” x 9” x 2” pan and sprinkle over the top 6ozs chocolate chips and ¾ cup of chopped walnuts and/or pecans.
Bake in 325F oven for 55 minutes or until done.
Cool in pan on rack.

On May 10, 2015 I have a new release due out from Amber Allure:
THE REPLACEMENT www.amberquill.com  – THE REPLACEMENT.
Here’s a brief teaser:

When Noah loses his life partner to kidney failure, he needs a replacement to help run his restaurant business. After a couple of tryout failures, Noah interviews Gavin Murray. Gavin has everything needed to be the perfect general manager. He has the education, the experience, and the polish and sophistication required in a top executive. The only problem is that Noah finds him sexually attractive in a way that borders on obsession. He wants Gavin but he tells himself that he can’t have him. He’s still mourning Brett and he’s far from ready to move on with his life. If he had any sense he’d turn down Gavin’s application. Instead, he agrees to give Gavin a three-month trial period by convincing himself Gavin is his only option and business comes first.

A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE - DAY 25 - Y IS FOR YELLOW AND YOUNG

Day 25 is Y – A-Z Blog Challenge http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

Y is for Yellow and my favorite color. Yellow is perfect for a room that doesn’t have a window, such as my kitchen. Yellow walls brighten my front hall and part of the living room as well. I have yellow bed sheets to bring a little sunshine to a dark winter’s day. Yellow is also the color of butter, which I love, and the custard that forms the top layer of a real English Trifle, my husband’s favorite dessert.

Y is also for Young like the characters in:

GETTING REAL
By Christiane France

For TJ Delaney and Cole Labelle, it’s time to turn their lives around and get real.
TJ needs to exchange his indulgent, playboy lifestyle for a job and prove he’s a responsible adult rather than a spoiled, rich brat.

Cole also needs to grow up. It’s time to free himself of his family’s paranoid fears by proving being gay like his father is the only thing he and the man who gave him life have in common. Being openly gay doesn’t mean he’ll cause them the same problems and embarrassment his father did.

A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE - DAY 24 - X IS FOR XMAS

Day 24 is X – A-Z Blog Challenge http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

X is for Xmas (aka Christmas) and also for a Xebec, a three-masted Mediterranean sailing ship that was used by corsairs aka privateers or pirates and maybe still is. My knowledge of pirates begins and ends with Johnny Depp’s Pirates Of The Caribbean, so I’ll stick with Xmas, my most favorite time of the year.

In my house, our big dinner is on Christmas Eve—a holdover from when we lived in Montreal and always had a big house party that night. Just before midnight some of the guests would go to Midnight Mass and it was the job of those who stayed behind to organize the food. I don’t remember everything we ate, but Quebec Tourtiere (meat pie) and sugar pie were standard items on the menu and I still love them to this day.

Sugar Pie is a variation on a butter tart, and this is my version:

Christiane France’s Brandied Walnut & Orange Tart
Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg, well beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup finely ground walnuts
  • ¼ cup candied, finely ground orange peel
  • 1  tablespoon of brandy
  • 8-10 walnut halves
  • 1 x 8-inch tart shell
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 375F degrees.
  2. Cream butter and sugar.
  3. Add beaten egg and mix well.
  4. Add vanilla, walnuts, orange peel and brandy.
  5. Pour mixture into tart shell
  6. Decorate with walnut halves
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until brown.
Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

A HAPPY CHRISTMAS ENDING
By Christiane France

The sequel to the Amber Allure best-seller Raindrops And Roses...
When Drew and Michael first met, they spent every minute of their free time together, making love, dreaming, planning and generally behaving like they lived on their own private planet. Now, almost three months later, they’re still together, but only just. Michael’s been gradually distancing himself from Drew and he’s not returning Drew’s calls. They’re supposed to be spending Christmas with Michael’s family, so Drew forces a meeting. If Michael has met someone else, he wants to know, and he wants to know now.

A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE - DAY 23 - W IS FOR WALKING

Day 23 is W – A-Z Blog Challenge http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

W is for Walking

I love to walk. I’ve walked for miles around London, Paris, Rome, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Montreal, Toronto, and a million other places large and small. There’s something so special about walking as opposed to driving. If you’re in a vehicle, you can’t stop and smell the flowers or investigate whatever interesting item catches your eye. On foot, you can do all these things and more. You can investigate that intriguing little side street which you’d probably never find again if you had to look for a spot to park; check out that gorgeous dress in a store window; or follow the delightful aromas into a tiny café you’d never have noticed if you weren’t on foot. One rainy morning I was on a bus in Montreal on my way to work. It was stop and go traffic, probably slower than if I had walked, but I happened to notice a sofa and chair in a store window. I couldn’t get off the bus, but I spent my lunch hour retracing the route until I found the store. Yes, I bought the sofa and the chair and I still have them now.

After Griffin Andrews loses his job, the only way to the nearest town is by foot. It wouldn't have been a problem if he'd been wearing the right shoes. Unfortunately, he wasn’t.

OH, WHAT A KNIGHT
By Christiane France
A Peninsula Heights story and part of the KNIGHT MOVES AmberPax

Blurb:

Following the death of his employer, Harvey St. Onge—a local gay man with a reputation for attracting handsome young men and throwing wild parties at his country estate—Griffin Andrews is literally on the outside looking in. Harv had promised to take care of Griff, but when the lawyer shows up and Griff is paid off and shown the door with the rest of the staff, he figures Harv “forgot” his promise. Griff may be stuck in the country, miles from anywhere with no transportation and no proof of Harv’s promise, but he’s a survivor. He packs what he can carry and starts walking.

Partway into his journey another motorist stops and offers Griff a lift. Shane Walker says he’s just going as far as Peninsula Heights. But by the time they get there, Griff’s life has done a fast one-eighty. He has a new friend, the promise of a job, and a place to stay. It all sounds good. Maybe too good to be true?

A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE - DAY 22 - V IS FOR VARIETY

Day 22 is V – A-Z Blog Challenge http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

V is for Variety and I admit to loving Variety in all things, especially when it comes to books, clothes, food and music. With books I mostly read fiction and it’s a mix of crime fiction, suspense, romance and anything interesting that catches my eye. Clothes have been my secret passion as far back as I can remember—probably a hangover from childhood when I would sneak into my aunt’s bedroom and play dress-up. I love clothes. Period. Food is another biggie with me. It must be attractive, tasty, and nutritious. Vietnamese, Greek and Italian are my favorites, but when it comes to individual dishes, roast chicken with all the trimmings is still No.1.

And as Shakespeare once said, “If music be the food of love…” I love most kinds of music from classical to rock, to r&b, and country, but boy bands/groups are special: Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, The Temptations, The Rolling Stones, and more recently Maroon Five, and the British group, Keane. Last weekend Jersey Boys was on TV. The house was quiet and I was alone, and I just sat there and enjoyed every single second of it.

I have one music story:

A Little Bit Of Country
by Christiane France

http://www.amberquill.com/store/p/1758-A-Little-Bit-Of-Country.aspx

When misfortune ended Max Mayler’s career as a singer, he bought The Showtime Bar, an establishment with a long history of giving aspiring artists an opportunity to showcase their talents. It’s where Max got his chance, and he wants to continue the tradition.

Jay Ferman has the exceptional voice and the sexy good looks to make it big, and although he’s been performing every Saturday night for weeks, no one pays him any attention. It could be canned music for all they seem to know or care.

Max quickly realizes the problem is Jay’s failure to truly connect with his audience. But, as Max tells one of his servers, he operates a bar and not a school for wannabees. He likes Jay, but his performance deficit is none of Max’s business.

But will Max make it his business and give Jay some much-needed advice, especially after the men connect in a very personal way?

MySexySatrday - OH, GEORGE

April 24, 2015:

Playing house with the help is as risky as playing house with the boss. But if you just can’t keep your hands of one another what’s a guy to do? For this week’s edition of MySexySaturday http://mysexysaturday.blogspot.ca/ I have seven paragraphs from:

OH, GEORGE
By Christiane France

Blurb:
By projecting the image of a swinging bachelor, company owner Zack Hannington has never had a problem keeping his personal life private from his employees. But when handsome and ambitious George Parker joins the secretarial pool, Zack finds himself indulging in X-rated daydreams that stress him out and seriously mess with his head.
He knows George is a kindred spirit, and he’s positive he’s met the man somewhere before, but he can’t remember where or when, and his own rule of never playing house with "the help" makes matters worse.
Zack doesn’t know if he’s in love or in lust with George, but just as everything seems to be working out even better than his dreams, he screws up and loses it all...

^ ^ ^

Zack reached over and touched his partner’s face. “I think I knew even before that first time. I had the wildest daydreams about you. I couldn’t get you out of my mind for a single minute, no matter what I did.”

“What did you dream about?”

“You and me here together in this room.”

George’s stroking became a little more urgent. “Do we have any clothes on?”

“I don’t. I’m lying here on the bed naked, and I’m holding my breath while I watch you undress. Which you manage to do in a very sexy way.”

“You mean slow motion? Like a striptease?”

“Exactly. Then…” Zack closed his eyes, trying to recall the details. “Then you come over to me. You look so good, I’m almost salivating.”

A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE - DAY 21 - U IS FOR UNSUB

Day 21 is U – A-Z Blog Challenge http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

U is for an Unsub or Unknown Subject aka a suspect or person of interest which I learned watching TV crime shows. U is also for Uncomfortable, Undecided, Unhappy, and Unsettled--all the earmarks of a bad day. Then there’s Unforgiving and Unrelenting which pretty much describes how we feel when someone does us wrong. And what about the stuff we do that is either Unnecessary or Unwitting? Two acts we’re all guilty of at one time or another. Unbelievable and Unimaginable cover a host of things from winning the lottery to the latest inventions in technology that simply boggle the mind—such as one of the latest techno toys which is a computer that looks and is worn like a wristwatch. Undercover sums up an image of someone who is not who they claim to be and we’ve all had experience of Unreliable in one form or another be it another person or a piece of equipment that claimed to be everything it was not.

My favorite word beginning with “U” is Unicorn. That cute little mythical horse with a horn growing out of its forehead. When I was small I thought unicorns were real. Who knows? Maybe they are if you know where to look for them.

A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE - DAY 20 - T IS FOR TRAINS

T is for Trains.

Marylebone Station, London, UK

Although I haven’t been on a train in a while, I love train travel. I once got on a train in London’s Victoria Station made a couple of changes in Paris and Rome and ended up in Naples. Then there was the one from Malaga where I changed in Madrid for the night train to Paris. On the way the train was struck by lightning. Scared everyone silly and one man had a heart attack. When we finally arrived in Paris I couldn’t get a hotel in Paris so I continued on to London. I’ve traveled on slow steam trains, fast trains, metro/underground trains, and on the TGV which whisked me from Avignon to Marseille in almost the blink of an eye. I’ve also taken the Chunnel from London to Paris. Instead of what used to be a whole day’s journey, you now step on the train in London and a little more than two hours later you’re in Paris. It’s so fast you don’t even realize you’ve spent twenty minutes under the English Channel until you’re on the other side, enjoying the French countryside.

And then there was the time I was on a Swiss train when it got stuck half way down a mountain that was so steep the train was almost standing on its nose.

A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE - DAY 19 - SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE

Day 19 is S – A-Z Blog Challenge http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

S is for SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE:

SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE
By Christiane France

(Part of the London Calling series)

When Cal and Rob first met, they were star-struck, wet-behind-the-ears teenagers who thought all it took to make it in Hollywood was a great body and good looks. Cal eventually gave up the dream and became a reporter for an entertainment magazine, while Rob went on to become a major motion picture star.

Over the next few years, they broke up and got back together a dozen or more times. Then Rob hit a bad patch when Cal caught him with another man and kicked him out. Now, almost two years have passed without a word. Cal has no idea if Rob is even dead or alive, until Rob calls Cal’s boss out of the blue and offers to do an interview—on condition that Cal flies to England where Rob is living so they can talk face-to-face.

Because of their personal history, Cal knows he’s the best person to interview Rob, and so does his boss. But since Cal is still in love with the man, will the trip to London result in even more heartbreak?

S is also for Sour Cream Coffee Cake:

This recipe was given to me many years ago by a friend and is still one of the best I’ve ever tasted:

1 cup sugar
½ cup unsalted butter
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
2 cups flour
1-1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla

Topping:

1/3 cup brown sugar mixed together with 1-1/2 tablespoons cinnamon and ½ cup of chopped walnuts.

(Variation: Replace the cinnamon with cocoa and the nuts with ground hazlenuts.)

Preheat oven to 350F

Cream butter and sugar and add eggs.
Mix sour cream with baking soda and leave to rise.
Mix flour and baking powder together.
Add flour mixture and sour cream mixture alternately to butter/egg mixture, and then add the vanilla.

Pour half of the batter into a 9” x 9” pan, or a tube pan. Sprinkle with one-third the topping mix. Add the remaining batter and another one-third of the topping mix. Swirl lightly with a knife to distribute topping. Sprinkle remaining topping over the batter and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour in a 350F oven.

A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE - DAY 17 - R IS FOR RISING DAMP AND RAPINI

Day 18 is R – A-Z Blog Challenge http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

R is for Rising Damp something different in the way of ghost stories –

It’s generally believed that a ghost must remain in the place where he died until such time as his murderer is apprehended or his demise is somehow revenged. So what’s a ghost to do when is he’s accidentally relocated and needs help to return home:
RISING DAMP
By Christiane France

Blurb:

When Matt Jones takes a temporary job as a housekeeper/housesitter in an old and imposing three-story Queen Anne Victorian estate, he’s worried about patching up a misunderstanding with his new boyfriend. He has no idea he’ll be sharing the premises with a ghost and, within the month, his life will drastically change.

Never in Matt’s wildest dreams would he have imagined that living with a sexy ghost could be so exciting and rewarding...

R is also for Rapini. If you’re not familiar with this vegetable, Rapini is something of a cross between spinach and broccoli. I wash and cook the Rapini in boiling, slightly salted water, then saute it with a little olive oil and lots of garlic. It’s good alone and even better with freshly cooked Italian sausage.

It's Complicated
by Christiane France
There's also a sequel - LOOKING FOR ANSWERS www.amberquill.com; http://www.allromanceebooks.com and http://www.amazon.com

Blurb:

Pete Letouche and Mitch Ravello lusted over one another in high school, but that’s as far as it went until prom night when a couple of drinks gave them the courage to put their thoughts into action and share their first sexual experience.

With Pete’s father chief of police and Mitch’s reputed to be the local crime boss, Pete knew there could never be anything more between them than that one night.

Shortly thereafter, Pete left town. First to train as a master chef and then work at different hotels all over the country. But during that time he never quite forget Mitch and he never lost sight of his childhood dream to one day own a gourmet food shop like his grandmother’s family once had.

Ten years have passed. Pete is back and his shop is both a reality and a success. He’s on top of the world until Mitch walks into the shop and announces he’s taken over the note Pete signed for the down-payment on the building where the shop is located.

Pete knows Mitch’s father suffered a heart attack and is now in a vegetative state with no hope of recovery. What he doesn’t know is who took over Sal Ravello’s business of loan sharking and shaking down local business? His son is his obvious successor, but Mitch says not. Pete has no way of knowing if Mitch is telling the truth and to make matters worse the feelings they once had for one another are still alive and well. Pete figures the feelings amount to nothing more than warmed over old memories. But when Mitch invites him to dinner at his place, Pete decides to go. A private, face to face meeting could be the perfect opportunity to find out about the present and put the past to rest.

A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE - DAY 16 - PARIS

Day 16 is P – A-Z Blog Challenge http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

P is for Paris. My first visit to the City of Light (or is it Love?) happened on Bastille Day--July 14 is the French national holiday and the whole city was en fete. It was everything I hoped for and more. The artists at the foot of Sacre Coeur in Montmartre, the Left Bank with its famous cafes, the fabulous department stores on the Boulevard des Italiens, and the chill that ran down my spine when I walked across La Place de La Concorde where les aristocrats lost their heads to Madame La Guillotine. Paris is everything you’ve heard and more. You either hate it or you love it and for me it was love at first sight.

P is also for Pandas and Penguins—probably because I love the black and white combo.

P is also for PARIS HEAT a menage story set in Paris:

PARIS HEAT
By Christiane France

The Romance Studio gave it 5 hearts and nominated the book for CAPA Award.

Blurb:
From old-fashioned girl to swinger in twenty-four hours?
After being dumped by her boyfriend for what he said was her old-fashioned, narrow-minded attitude toward sex, Trish Stacey decided to use a small win on the lottery for a trip to Paris, France. Paris is the city of love and Frenchmen are supposed to be the world’s greatest lovers, so, hopefully, if she can just loosen up a bit, maybe some of it will rub off and she can finally get with the program.
However, the need to loosen up happens a lot quicker than Trish expected. Before the plane leaves the ground, a man sits down next to her and suddenly ooh la la takes on a whole new meaning. Especially after they arrive in Paris and Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome introduces her to his equally delicious male partner...

MySexySaturday - FINDING THE TRUTH

April 18, 2015:

If I have two guys who are always there for one another it has to be Marcus and Jake in Looking For Answers and the sequel, Finding The Truth. So, for this week’s edition of MySexySaturday http://mysexysaturday.blogspot.ca/ I have seven paragraphs from:

FINDING THE TRUTH
By Christiane France

(Part of the Peninsula Heights series)

The sequel to Amber Allure’s Best Seller Looking For Answers...

P.I. Marcus D’Angelo thought he’d solved the mystery surrounding the rumors of shakedowns and extortion in Little Italy involving Sal Ravello. Now he’s worried he could be wrong.

His boyfriend, magazine reporter Jake Reilly, suggests that Marcus’ informant was feeling a little bitter after his friends sold up and moved away from the old neighborhood. Was the man’s information more self-serving than true? Marcus realizes this is possible, and also realizes he’ll have to go back, recheck everything and find confirmation.

But something else worries Marcus more—there’s a chance Jake’s new job could mean him being sent to the Far East for several months. Can their relationship survive such a long separation?

...Five minutes later I called back Jake. “Reservations are required, but I got us a table for six-thirty, and I can meet you in the bar any time after six. That work for you?”

“Perfect. It’ll give me just enough time to make myself decent and get down there.”

I felt a sudden stirring between my legs. “This mean you’re currently indecent?”

“You could say that.” Jake gave a soft, sexy chuckle. “I just got out of a hot shower.”

“And now you’re completely naked?”

“Pretty much. Except for a towel that is.” His voice had dropped to a gravelly whisper. “Too bad you’re not here, babe. Especially since we got interrupted this morning.”

I slid lower in my chair and ran a hand down the front of my pants. “And I suppose you’re now feeling a tad needy, hmm?”
